QR Codes for Small Business — What Actually Works
How to design QR codes that people actually scan, from placement to error correction to landing-page etiquette.
Every restaurant and boutique now has a QR code somewhere. Most of them get ignored. Here is how to design one people actually scan.
Give people a reason to scan
"Scan for menu" beats "Scan me". "Scan to join Wi-Fi" beats an app-store link. The best CTAs pay off in one tap.
Use high error correction
When you print a QR on packaging, coffee cups or badges, damage is guaranteed. Set error correction to H (30% recovery) so a smudged corner still works. Our Business QR Code Generator uses H by default.
Contrast beats colour
A brand-coloured QR looks great — until your printer swaps the ink. Make sure the dark modules stay significantly darker than the light background. Test both on-screen and printed.
Never point at the homepage
QR scans deserve a dedicated landing page: no navigation, one action, mobile-first. Track it separately from your organic traffic.
Wi-Fi and vCards work
Two QR types over-deliver:
- Wi-Fi credentials — guests connect without typing a password.
- vCards — one scan adds you to their contacts. Perfect on business cards.
Both are supported in our Business QR generator.
Log the source
Add a UTM parameter (or a short redirect) so you can tell "poster QR" scans apart from "receipt QR" scans. Otherwise you have no idea which placement worked.
